Welcome to Class!

Hello everyone -- welcome to class! Thank you for your flexibility this week as I return from vacation. Your "reflection" this week (yes, worth points) is to introduce yourself. Write as much or as little as you would like me and your other classmates to know. Some things I would like to know specifically are: 1. Your name. (Just first is fine -- this blog is public.) 2. Whether or not you are currently teaching. If you are, what subject and grade. 3. Why you want to be a teacher. 4. At least one fun fact about yourself. 5. Anything else you would like to tell us!   A little bit about me: I am Professor Lorenzetti, and I am currently teaching graduates and undergraduates at some of the CUNY schools here in New York City. I have held various teaching positions in the past decade and a half, primarily in arts education. I am working on my pilot project for my dissertation, and this is my favorite class to teach. I have an amazing one-eyed cat named Henry, and I am a voracious reader in my spare time. I am looking forward to meeting you all!

  1. Hello Everyone,

I am Sophia and I am finishing up my first year as a teacher in the Bronx. I teach the stand alone 1st Grade ENL class at my school. I wanted to be a teacher because I had several teachers along the way that believed in me, helped me build my confidence and eventually allowed me to realize how much I loved academia. I enjoy working with children because they can change the way you see yourself and your surroundings. Fun Fact: I am an excellent lip syncer.

  3. Hi everyone!

My name is Alison and I am finishing my first year as a Kindergarten ENL teacher in Elmhurst, Queens. I became a teacher after leaving a seven year career in the entertainment industry. My father was a physical education teacher/athletic director for almost 30 years in the DOE and he inspired me to change my career and to do something more rewarding. It was a tough decision but I’m so glad that I went through with it! Fun fact about myself, I used to work for the Late Show with David Letterman.

  4. Hello,
My name is Brian. I am an ENL teacher for grades 6-8 at a middle school in the Bronx. I want to be a teacher because I find it to be incredibly rewarding to see your students understanding and utilizing the skills you have taught them. A fun fact about myself is I own a fantastic bicycle rain poncho that has enabled me to ride my bike to/from work on numerous days without getting my work clothes completely soaked. I am very thankful for this.

  5. Hello!

My name is Charleen. I am currently teaching ENL, grades 6-8. I have a stand alone class, but mostly co-teach. I became a teacher because I was already working with young people and loved it. I wanted to continue to work with students, learn from them, learn with them, encourage them and help them achieve. A fun fact about me is that I have dual citizenship.

  6. Hi everyone,

My name is Lily. I teach ENL for 30 Kindergarten students in the Bronx. I do pull-out and push-in instruction. From 2013-2015, I worked for a literacy non-profit helping students learn to read. It was so rewarding watching them grow and be able to do their classwork finally. I noticed that the ELLs always, always struggled with reading, and so I wanted to go into education to help them. However, at least in my own experience at my particular school, we are not teaching what is helping them and it's been very disheartening. While I may not be a teacher per se for much longer, I do plan to stay in this field so that I can find ways to give these students exactly what they need to succeed in our educational system. A fun fact is that I am related to David ben Gurion, the first Prime Minister of Israel.

  7. Hi!
My name is Elpida. I am currently teaching in two schools in East Harlem (Elementary-Middle and Middle). I co-teach at one school and I do stand alone ENL in the other school. I have students in grades K- 8. I wanted to be a teacher because of the joy that comes with making a difference. I was an ELL when I came to America and I know what it feels like to be in my students' position.

    Some fun facts about me:
I lived in Greece for 9 years.
    I love skateboarding.
    I recently got married!

  8. Hello,

My name is Holly and I am an ENL push-in teacher for 2nd and 5th grade in Corona, Queens. After working in the sales and marketing section of the automotive business for 7 years, I wanted a change so that my work would be more meaningful and therefor chose to become a teacher. It is a great feeling to see how much progress my students have made in less than a year. One fun fact is that I've been playing the accordion since I was 5 years old.

  9. Hello!

My name is Philip. I teach 9th-12th grade ENL in Harlem. At the moment, I teach one standalone class and a few push-in classes. I like teaching because it is a challenging and rewarding field, and I never have a dull day. Teaching ENL is especially interesting for me since I learned English as a second language myself. Besides that, I grew up in Germany and I like food, books, and sports.

  10. Greetings!

My name is Jordan. I am an ENL teacher at Morris Academy High School in the Bronx. I co-teach Math, English, and Global and have two standalone beginner classes. I love to teach. 11. Hello All,

My name is Caio, and I'm an English/ENL teacher at the International High School at Prospect Heights. I became a teacher because the singular influence on my life was a teacher of mine, and I hope to some day have a similar effect on my students. Fun fact: I have eaten bear sausage, with only a bit of guilt.

  12. Good afternoon all,

My name is Dana. I am the ENL coordinator/teacher at Millennium Art Academy high school in the (boogie down) Bronx. I decided to become a teacher because I worked for years in the private sector and I needed a change. Teaching is an occupation where I felt I could give back in even the smallest way. Even though teaching is hard work I wouldn't go back to doing anything else. I love it. Fun facts about me is that I love to hoola hoop, dance, and play with puppies.

  13. Hey everyone. My name is Derek and I am currently teaching ENL/ELA for 8th grade. When it comes to being a teacher, it’s not that I want to be one in general, but specifically wanted to pursue TESOL due to its emphasis on language development and helping students have a voice in their (potentially new) community. As some people may know about me, I am from a semi-rural section of upstate New York and when I return there I reside in a log cabin. I also ventured to DanNang, Vitenam for a study abroad which served as my very first flight.

  14. Hi Everyone!

My name is Yaser. I am currently completing my first year of teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ENL in the South Bronx. I want to be an ENL teacher because I want to open doors for my students by providing them with the skills they need to be successful. I know how challenging learning English can be because both of my parents' second language is English. Lastly, I have always been interested in language development, My undergraduate major was Speech-Pathology but I decided a classroom setting is better fitting for me so ENL was the happy middle.

    Some fun facts:
    - I am a rock climber
    - Can communicate in ASL (if its super slow!)
    - I have been to 25 states

  15. Hey all,

My name is Jaime and I currently teach ENL and ELA at a high school in Brooklyn. My quest to become a teacher began with a passion for writing that grew into a desire to help students develop multiple literacies as a means of advocating for themselves and their families. I moved to New York from Ohio last summer, and help my parents out with their beekeeping endeavors when I visit home.

  16. Hi!

My name is Henry and I am a 4th grade teacher in Brooklyn. I decided to become a teacher because I like working with kids and I'm interested in language and literacy. One time I traveled down the Amazon river in a hammock.

  17. Hi Everyone!

My name is Rachel, and I'm a 7th Grade Math & Science teacher in the South Bronx. It's my first year teaching, and like most of you, I'm part of the New York City Teaching Fellows program. After I graduated college, I wanted to travel and live abroad, so I moved to Argentina. While I was there, I found that I could make quite a bit of money off of teaching English -- so that was what I did to get by. I sort of "fell" into teaching, and ended up realizing that I loved it! The first year of teaching has been quite a challenge (it's notorious for a reason), but I've also really enjoyed it.

I'm originally from Phoenix, Arizona...and I'm so glad that it's finally summer in NYC and that the sun is out again. I love warm weather.

  18. Hello everyone!

My name is Jasmine, and I'm a Global 1 teacher in the South Bronx (same school as Rachel, who just posted). I've worked with children through a nonprofit, and also at charter and private schools. This is my first year with the DOE. I come from a family of teachers, and have always admired the profession. I learn so much from my students, and I love (sometimes hate...and then love) the challenge. I'm excited for the summer, not only because we teachers get a bit of a break, but because it's my kind of season. I grew up in the tropics for most of my life - between Brazil and different countries in West Africa, and can't wait to get that vitamin D glow again!

  19. Hello! My name is Rachele, and I am currently a 5th grade ESL teacher in Borough Park/ Brooklyn Chinatown. I co-teach/push-in for three classes, during their literacy periods. I accidentally became a teacher after enjoying my times as a Pre-K teacher and volunteering as an adult ESL teacher. I love working with kids because I learn just as much from them, as they do from me. (cheesy) Fun fact: My name is pronounced Rachel. According to my mom, if you slap a vowel at the end of a name, its automatically Italian.

  20. Hey everyone!
My Name is Kristina and I am finishing up a year of teaching ESL at a middle school in the Bronx (mixed grades 6-8 and proficiency levels).

I had not intended on being a teacher until serving 2 years in the Peace Corps. I showed up to training thinking I was part of one program but in fact the program evolved I ended up teaching English to Francophone students for the duration of my time living in West Africa. When I came back, I decided to get a Masters degree and keep on the teaching path. I love working with students and kids, especially when you really start to bond with them.

Fun facts (besides my teaching inspiration story): I now speak French with a West African accent and I come from a big family of six kids.

  21. Hello! My name is Andrew, and I am currently a high school ENL teacher at Esperanza Preparatory Academy in East Harlem. I teach grades 9-12 of intermediate and advanced English proficiency. I used to work at a legal education based non-profit organization where I had my first teaching position. I really enjoyed the feeling of being able to help students recognize what they enjoy and want to explore in their lifetime. I want to be a teacher to help students develop their identity and set high goals for themselves. A fun fact about me is that at one point in my life I pursued becoming a pilot. I didn't complete my training but I know how to fly a small plane. I look forward to meeting you all!

  22. Hello all-
I'm Tara, a wild Alaskan who found out I fit just perfectly in the bustle of NYC when I started Teaching Fellows last year. I'm a 4th/5th ESL grade teacher in the Bronx as of now, most likely moving to a high school in Manhattan for the fall. I've always taught kids (because kids rock, and I want to challenge them to critically think and change the status quo, and help them love themselves). I needed the credibility to keep teaching and a Master's in TESOL is finding out to be a prefect fit for continuing a career in education. I prefer not to eat pizza unless it has ranch dressing with it.

    1. Hi everyone,

My name is Laura. I'm finishing up my first year teaching at a high school in East Harlem. I teach a mixture of standalone, pull out and coteaching. I also teach one section of beginning Mandarin. I became a teacher because I saw what an impact it can have on students from my dad who was a NYC teacher and principal for his whole career. A fun fact about me is that I was once chased by a monkey on the side of a moutain in China.

    2. Hello everyone,

My name is Tara and I teach ENL to 9th grade Newcomers in Queens. I joined the Teaching Fellows after I realized that social work was not for me. Even though this was a challenging year, I enjoyed my time with my students. I love learning and meeting people from different cultures. When I have free time I like to horseback ride and kick-box.
